Bilingual Speech Language Pathology

The University of New Mexico Department of Speech and Hearing Sciences is proud to offer a concentration in Bilingual Speech-Language Pathology. This concentration is open to master’s level students, but students can begin working towards this concentration at the undergraduate level. The requirements for this concentration are the following:

Earn at least 3 credits from the following:

  • SHS561 - Bilingual Language Acquisition
  • LING590 - Topics in Linguistics: Childhood Bilingualism 

Earn at least 3 credits from the following: 

  • SHS539 -Topics: Bilingual Assessment & Intervention 
  • SHS 562 - Bilingual Assessment & Intervention 

Earn at least 3 credits from the following: 

  • SHS520 - Multicultural Considerations in Communication 

Note: If you took SHS 459 at UNM, you will need to take an alternate graduate-level course approved by department advisors. 

Although no clock hours are required, you are encouraged to obtain clock hours with bilingual populations through clinical rotations.

Funding to support this extracurricular work is available through department scholarships funded by Linguagrafia and the Bilingual Speech and Language Lab.
