The Department of Speech and Hearing Sciences maintains a scholarship fund to support clinic clients who struggle to pay for services, as well as a general account for equipment, events and other special needs. Follow the links below to give today!
The Department of Speech and Hearing Sciences General Fund
The Speech and Hearing Sciences Chair fund provides flexibility for the department chair to invest in small projects and to spend where the needs are greatest throughout the academic year. We welcome additional contributions to this fund.
Dolores S. and Paul L. Butt Comunidad Crecer Fund
Comunidad Crecer, which translates to ‘community for growth’ is a longstanding program in our department that was started in 1990 by Dr. Butt. It supports Speech & Hearing Sciences students to travel to Mexico City with SHS faculty, to provide clinical services at Comunidad Crecer, a school for kids with multiple disabilities. Donations to the Dolores S. and Paul L. Butt Comunidad Crecer Fund are used to support student travel costs associated with the Comunidad Crecer program.
Richard B. Hood Endowed Scholarship for Graduate Studies in Speech & Hearing Sciences
Dr. Hood started this scholarship in 1996 and many of his friends contributed over the years. Dr. Hood was a faculty member in the UNM Speech and Hearing Sciences department from 1968-1993 and served as department chair for seven years, until his retirement in 1993. This fund provides scholarships for incoming graduates
Mary C. Crossman Memorial Scholarship in Communicative Disorders
The Crossman Scholarship Fund was initiated in honor of Mary Crossman. This fund is used to provide scholarships to incoming graduate students to help them while in our graduate program.
Bruce Porch Endowed Scholarship
The Porch Scholarship Fund was initiated by Dr. Porch who was a faculty member of UNM Speech and Hearing Sciences for many years. His special interests are 1) neurological disorders, and 2) stuttering. He is the author of the Porch Index of Communicative Abilities and the Porch Index of Communicative Abilities in Children. This fund provides scholarships for incoming graduate students.
Fred M. Chreist, Sr. Scholarship
The Chreist Scholarship Fund was initiated to honor Dr. Fred Chreist, Sr. and his wife Dr. Chreist who founded the Speech and Hearing Sciences Department. This fund provides scholarships to incoming graduate students.
