What mechanisms are needed to produce speech? What features do we analyze in an assessment? How do we record it for analysis? In this course, we will learn the basic anatomy of the speech mechanisms, the theory of production, how to transcribe speech and assess it in a spectrogram. The motivation of this course is to give you the foundational skills for phonetic analyses and develop the necessary skills to help you begin to think like a clinician when confronted with speech sounds.

Introduction to basic anatomy and physiology for speech, language, hearing and swallowing. Covers five systems: respiratory, phonatory, articulatory, auditory and neurological.

A general study of the science of hearing assessment and with audiology as a field of knowledge and a profession. Instruction emphasis: terminology, physics of sound, anatomical and physiology of the hearing mechanism, audiologic evaluation and screening,

Introduction to speech and hearing science. Covers basic science of sound, acoustic theory of speech production, acoustic and physiologic phonetics, sound transmission through the auditory system, acoustic and physiologic consequences of speech and hearing disorders.

Assessment and treatment of articulation and phonological disorders. Prerequisite: *303 or LING 303.

Structure and function of the central and peripheral nervous systems as they relate to normal and disordered communication.

Individual research into an area proposed by the student and conducted under the direction of a faculty member. Restriction: permission of instructor.

Course content includes behavioral objectives, program design, data collection, client/family counseling, ethnographic interviewing with multicultural families, behavioral management and professional issues including certification and licensure requirements, ethical conduct and federal laws protecting the handicapped.

Students will obtain understanding of how identity and the cultural and linguistic diversity of individuals affect communication. Strategies for sensitive assessment and intervention methods will be presented, including exploration of biases, cultural humility, and privilege.

Practicum assignment to provide supervised clinical practice including treatment and evaluation, in our department clinic and at off campus sites such as schools, private practice, hospital, and other medical settings.

Practicum seminar covering the foundations for intervention in speech-language pathology. Topics include clinic documentation, materials, data collection, treatment plans, facilitation techniques, and counseling and management of behavior as they apply to real-life clients. Course focuses on practice issues in medical and school settings. Issues of terminology, documentation (EMR, IEP), eligibility, insurance, interprofessional collaboration, and special education law will be covered.

Practicum seminar covering the integration of coursework as it applies to virtual reality cases on KASA skill competencies that apply to low incidence disorders.

A clinical practicum that provides exposure to individuals with suspected or confirmed hearing loss and/or amplification devices. Prerequisites: 321, 425, 458. Restriction: admitted to M.S. in Speech Language Pathology and permission of clinic director.

This course focuses on the principles that speech-language pathologists (SLPs) use to conduct assessments with individuals who are suspected of having communication, cognitive, or swallowing disorders.

This course includes a study and analysis of research methodology as applied to problems and questions in the discipline of Speech and Hearing Sciences (SHS). It is designed to assist graduate students in SHS to understand the key concepts, processes, and terminology used in evidence-based practice. Emphasis will be given to the evaluation and critique of current research reports that appear in professional journals and how to utilize that research along with patient perspectives and clinical experience to inform clinical decision making.

This course is a comprehensive survey of predominant adult neurogenic communication disorders. Content includes theoretical issues, etiology, differential diagnosis, symptomatology, prognosis and treatment approaches. The lab portion will introduce techniques and allow practice for assessment and treatment for persons with adult neurogenic communication disorders. The course is a combination of lecture-style, discussion, case study and lab.

This advanced course addresses normal and disordered patterns of speech development, methods of analyzing data, and principles of assessment and treatment of speech sound disorders.

This course addresses biological and neurological bases of the normal swallow across the lifespan, the nature of swallow disorders, as well as current research, theory and practice in the assessment and intervention of swallowing disorders and associated problems in both pediatric and adult populations.

This course focuses on the application of evidence-based social communication intervention strategies for individuals with social pragmatic disorder, autism, and other developmental disabilities. Includes specific strategies and instructional formats such as prompting/cueing, modeling, social narratives, and naturalistic teaching to promote a variety of social communication skills

Overview of adult neurogenic speech disorders with a focus on assessment and treatment.

This course covers the etiology, characteristics, assessment, and treatment of stuttering, as well as other fluency differences like cluttering. The class provides the student with the knowledge and skills to effectively assess and treat clients. Restriction: admitted to M.S. Speech-Language Pathology.

A course exploring a topic not covered by the standard curriculum but of interest to faculty and students in a particular semester.

This course focuses on assessments and interventions for children ages birth to five who have language and communication impairments.

Practical experience in a public, private or non-profit organization, supervised by a professional with an academic component overseen by a UNM instructor. Restriction: admitted to M.S. Speech-Language Pathology and permission of Clinic Director.

This course focuses on identifying the critical factors that influence bilingual language acquisition, examining the linguistic characteristics of English-Spanish bilinguals, and considering the implications of bilingualism for speech and language intervention planning. Prerequisite: 431 and 459.

Faculty-supervised investigative study that results in the development and writing of a master’s thesis. Offered on a CR/NC basis only. Restriction: admitted to M.S. Speech-Language Pathology.

Design research questions and develop rigorous methodologies to answer those questions within students’ areas of interest.

A mentored teaching practicum experience to prepare doctoral students for teaching discipline-specific content at the college level. This is the capstone for the required teaching coursework for the PhD in Communication Science Disorders program. Restriction: permission of instructor.

This course provides doctoral students with an in depth understanding of topics in a research specialty area (e.g., autism spectrum disorders, neurorehabilitation, bilingual assessment and intervention, etc.). Specific course topics determined by the instructor. Restriction: permission of instructor.

Each doctoral candidate must prepare a written dissertation. The dissertation for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy must demonstrate the ability to do independent research and competence in scholarly exposition. At an advanced level, it should present the results of an original investigation of a significant problem and should provide the basis for a publishable contribution to the research literature in the major field.
