Accent ModificationIndividuals who speak English as a secondary language and wish to increase their ability to be understood by others may choose to elect accent modification services.
Individuals who wish to modify their accents may be evaluated by a team of speech-language pathology (SLP) graduate student clinicians under direct supervision of a certified clinical SLP faculty member. One or two sessions may be scheduled, followed by an information-sharing session and a complete written report.
Accent instruction may be provided in paired or individual session formats. Sessions are tailored to the functional needs of individuals and encompass work on articulation of General American English speech sounds specific to consonant and vowel production, as well as prosody, word and syllable stress patterns, and intonation. Rules for grammar may also be incorporated. Visual models of speech production patterns in General American English are also incorporated.
