Associate Professor Cathy Binger has been awarded a research grant from the National Institutes of Health. This three-year research  project focuses on helping children with disabilities improve their language skills. The children in the study have severe speech disorders and augment their speech by using other forms of communication, such as 'talking computers.' This intervention study will examine how children using these augmentative communication modes learn the same language rules that other children learn. For example, how do children using talking computers learn to put adjectives before nouns (WET + DOG) and actions before objects (KISS + BABY) when they are using a computer that talks for them? This project promises to help us better understand how ensure that children with severe speech disorders master the same language rules as other children so that they can reach their full linguistic potential.
